After years of wanting to learn Illustrator, I finally took a short course. Then: the pen tool = FEAR; Now: I want to marry Illustrator! 
2nd project involved becoming comfortable with the pen tool, transform & effects by drawing a vase with 6 different flowers. Many mistakes, but not bad for only 5 hours of "experience".

Very impressive for your level of experience...I'm jealous. Be sure to look up tutorials on transparency masks and the blend tool... I didn't discover these for a long time and they are VERY useful.
